NOTE: If your sidewalk was damaged during Hurricane Sandy, you can call the Community Board office at 718-859-6357 to request a special inspection and repairs. Sidewalks must have suffered storm damage, such as from the roots of a fallen tree, in order to qualify for free repair by the City of New York.
New York City’s Department of Transportation (DOT) is tasked with keeping the 12,750 miles of city sidewalks safe for pedestrians. This undertaking requires the participation of home, building and business owners as well as city agencies.

Sidewalk Facts (from Section 19-152 of New York’s Administrative Code)
– Property owners are responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining sidewalks adjoining their properties. DOT staff will inspect sidewalks and notify the property owner of needed repairs.
– In the event timely repairs are not made by the property owner, the City may hire private construction firms to make the repairs and then bill the property owner for the costs of the repairs.
– Property owners must also keep their sidewalks and 18 inches into the street clean of all garbage, debris, weeds, etc.
– Property owners are responsible for snow removal on sidewalks and public walkways.
