As the heat rises, New Yorkers are encouraged to stay cool! Cooling centers are open during periods of high heat. A cooling center is a facility, such as a senior center, community center, or public library, where people may go to enjoy air-conditioned comfort during a heat emergency. To find the nearest location, including hours of operation, call 311 or visit the City’s Cooling Center Finder website. New York City’s outdoor pools will be open through Labor Day weekend, every day from 11 AM – 7 PM (closed for cleaning 3-4 PM.) Fireworks & Community Safety
In New York City, all consumer fireworks, including sparklers, are illegal to use, buy, sell, or transport. The illegal use of fireworks can lead to serious burns, injuries, fires and even death. Teach children that fireworks are dangerous. Be #FDNYSmart – leave fireworks to the professionals! Call 311 or file a complaint online to anonymously report the use, delivery or sale of fireworks. Reporting Storm Damage
Please report flooding, downed branches and other storm-related concerns to 311 and to CB14 by calling or emailing your 311 service request number so that we can help track and follow up as needed. The clean-up from Tropical Storm Isaias will delay the collection of debris from previous storms but CB14 will do our best to work with the Parks Department to ensure that all reported locations are on their list. We have been very fortunate in CB14 that the Department of Sanitation-BK14 has pitched in with extra assistance to help collect storm debris throughout the district. The City has assembled a Downed Tree Task Force with several agencies to assist in this effort. Of course, should any emergency arise, call 911. Stay safe and well.
Community Safety & Fireworks Complaints
There have been an unprecedented number of reports of fireworks in our community over the past weeks. Remember, fireworks are illegal and dangerous. In addition, and in the words of one of our community residents, “They wake up babies, terrify dogs, trigger those with PTSD, and keep everyone in the neighborhood from being well-rested and healthy during this pandemic – including many essential workers who live here. They have also lit fires and put buildings and people in danger.” Please call 311, 911 or the FDNY Fireworks Enforcement Unit at 718-722-3600 to report fireworks in your neighborhood.
CB14 Public Safety Committee Meeting
The community is invited to attend this evening’s Public Safety Committee meeting. Members of Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzales’ office will outline the many critical services and programs concerning public safety, victim services and tips to avoid fraudulent schemes that have surfaced in relation to the pandemic. The Committee will also discuss community safety concerns, Brooklyn Borough Hall’s proposal on civilian oversight mechanisms for the NYPD, goals to develop a CB14 Youth Council, and the role of the Public Safety Committee in community preparedness. Get ready for some hot weather NYC! When temperatures rise, New York City operates Cooling Centers in air-conditioned public facilities including libraries, senior centers, community centers and NYCHA facilities to offer people relief from the heat. Hot and humid conditions can lead to heat-related health issues, particularly for the elderly. Take extra precaution and stay hydrated. Change Clocks & Batteries This Weekend
Daylight savings time ends on Sunday, November 5th. In addition to changing your clocks, FDNY reminds New Yorkers to check and change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. It’s quick and easy, and it saves lives. Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 6th. Please remember to set clocks back 1 hour. FDNY reminds all New Yorkers to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when they change their clocks for the end of Daylight Saving Time.

NYC Law: Drive 25 MPH
As of November 7, 2014, the speed limit on all New York City streets is 25 MPH unless otherwise posted. Excessive speed contributes to 25 percent of roadway fatalities on New York City Streets and is the leading cause of motor vehicle crashes. Reducing vehicle speed from 30 to 25 mph doubles the likelihood of a pedestrian surviving a crash. Lowering the speed limit is one of 63 initiatives being undertaken by New York City Mayor de Blasio’s administration as part of Vision Zero, a comprehensive set of policies to reduce traffic fatalities in New York City.
