Compost for Brooklyn – Closed for Season

Posted on: www.cb14brooklyn.com

Open Hours Suspended after Sunday, 10/28

After well over two years of uninterrupted and very productive use, the C4B compost system, located at Newkirk Avenue and East 8th Street, is in need of repairs and renovations. Open hours will be temporarily suspended while the infrastructure is upgraded. Assuming agreeable weather, the last open hours for the fall of 2012 are Sunday, October 28, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

While the C4B locations is closed, bring your scraps to the Cortelyou Greenmarket, (Cortelyou Road btwn Argyle & Rugby), on Sundays between 8:00am and 1:00pm, or check here for more locations. For more information about composting opportunities in Brooklyn, CLICK HERE to visit the NYCWasteLess website. Open hours will resume again in the spring of 2013. Compost for Brooklyn will be hosting a series of workdays to move the current compost through the system, build new bins, repair existing structures, and more. Visit the C4B website or facebook page for updates on dates and times for volunteer workdays.

Compost for Brooklyn (C4B) is a community composting project based in Kensington, Brooklyn committed to ecological restoration, composting, and education in our local neighborhood and beyond. Founded in March 2010, Compost for Brooklyn has transformed a vacant lot into a community composting project and thriving refuge for native plants and community members. Every week, neighbors come to the garden to relax, get their hands dirty, and drop off their veggie scraps, coffee grinds, and other organic waste. In the summer of 2011 alone, the garden received over 8,600 pounds of food scraps from individuals, local schools and businesses–diverting it from garbage trucks and landfills. Finished compost is used to amend depleted soils and cultivate healthy ecosystems. Compost for Brooklyn is a volunteer-run organization. Contact C4B at compostforbrooklyn@gmail.com if you’re interested in volunteering to host open hours. For more information about the educational programs offered along with other community events and activities, visit the website at compostforbrooklyn.org
