Back-to-School Youth Opportunities

The first day of school in New York City public schools is Thursday, September 5, 2019. There are many community events, school supply giveaways and activities to help your student get ready for the new school year. For more information, visit www.schools.nyc.gov or keep reading below.
The NYC Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) is your year-round source for afterschool programs, internships, jobs, recreational activities and other opportunities for young people in New York City. Back to School BBQ & School Supply Giveaway – The community is invited to a free BBQ to celebrate the end of summer break on Sunday, August 25th from 2 -6 PM in the PS 152 Courtyard (725 East 23rd Street btw. Glenwood Rd & Campus Rd.) The event will feature games, face painting, balloon sculpting, prizes, food and the distribution of free school supplies. This event is sponsored by Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte, Council member Farah Louis and the Flatbush Development Corporation. Back 2 School Giveaway Event – The Pakistani American Youth Organization (PAYO) invites the community to attend an end of summer community event on Sunday, August 25th at 7 PM. Free school supplies and refreshments will be available. For more information, call Atif at 631-612-7593.
Back to School Giveaway – Attend a free event on Monday, August 26th from 11 AM – 2 PM at the New Jerusalem United Methodist Church (484 Knickerbocker Ave, Brooklyn). Children can get free ID cards, backpacks, snacks and beverages. This event is sponsored by Assemblymember Maritza Davila and the 83rd Precinct Community Council. Back to School Festival Block Party – The annual “I Will Graduate Back to School Block Party” will take place on Friday August 30th, 2019 from 2 PM – 7 PM on Herkimer Street between Ralph and Howard Avenues in Brooklyn. The event will feature school supply giveaways, raffled prizes, food and beverages, a live D.J and activities promoting literacy for the youth in our community. This event is sponsored by the I Will Graduate Youth Development Program / Entertainers 4 Education Alliance. For more information, contact the event organizers at (718) 385-3133.
Public Library Programs – The New York Public Library is the nation’s largest public library system, with 92 locations in 88 NYC neighborhoods throughout the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island. They have been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. Did you know, they also offer afternoon Out-of-School Time Programs at no cost to participants? Click the links below to learn more. Parks Department Programs– The NYC Parks Department offers hundreds of free programs around the City for youth of all ages. NYC Parks Flag Football Program – The NYC Parks Instructional Series and Flag Football League take place in parks across all five boroughs. The Instructional Series includes fundamental instructional drills and strategies for boys and girls ages 5-17. The NYC Parks Flag Football League is open for girls and boys ages 9 to 17 for league play. All equipment will be provided: jerseys, flags, and footballs. Registration is first-come, first-served and is open until September 7. Instructional Series: August 1 – September 7, 2019, ages 5-17 Flag Football League: August 31 – November 2, 2019, ages 9-17. UFT Brooklyn Parent Conference: Join parents and guardians, grandparents and educators for a free, fun-filled day of informative workshops, networking, exhibitors and giveaways on Saturday, November 16 from 8:30 AM – 3 PM at David Ruggles Campus (141 Macon Street, Brooklyn, NY 11216).
