CB14 YOUTH CONFERENCE 2016

Brooklyn Community Board 14’s 9th Annual Youth Conference was held on Thursday, March 31, 2016, 4-7 PM, at the Flatbush YMCA (1401 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn.) Thank you to the over 70 organizations and hundreds of young people who attended the event and made it our biggest success yet! We will host our 10th Annual Youth Conference in Spring 2017 for New York City residents, ages 12-19, looking for volunteer opportunities, internships, summer jobs, community-based programs and more. See you in 2017!

2016 PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS

    Opportunities for full-time employment in the tech industry, mentoring, industry exposure & computer science training for young men of color.
  2. American Born Children Development Education Fund (ABCDEF Kids)
    Programs include multicultural events, American history, children’s study group

    Atlas: DIY provides access to legal services, learning opportunities and leadership development for immigrant youth.

  8. Boy Scouts of America – Greater New York Councils
    Boy Scouts of America teaches character development, leadership skills, physical fitness, community service and citizenship, featuring 8 different programs for students to engage in diverse activities.
  9. Boys’ Club of New York
    Information on our Career placement and College access program.
  10. Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce
    The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce hosts a number of community programs, benefits, resources and opportunities and a job bank for young people to avail themselves of to secure gainful employment.
  11. Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center – SUNY
    College Preparation; Career Training Programs; College Connections information.
  12. Brooklyn Museum
    Paid internships & art-making classes for teens at the Brooklyn Museum.
  13. Brooklyn Music School
    Brooklyn Music School offers year round extensive music & dance programs, as well as summer classes and community-based programs. Performance opportunities are offered throughout New York City.
  14. Brooklyn Public Library, Midwood Branch
    Information for teens about volunteering, internships, library materials, programs, and services for young adults.
  15. Brooklyn South Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
    Volunteer opportunities with local emergency response teams and information about personal & family disaster preparedness.
  16. CAMBA
    CAMBA will provide education about teen dating, healthy relationships, sexual assault & violence prevention, along with information about programs and resources.
  17. Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc
    Information on small businesses that may need Summer Interns.
  18. Catholic Charities Fatherhood Man-Up Program
    Career Opportunities and free parenting, domestic violence, anger management and job readiness workshops.
  19. Center for Economic Workforce Development / Kingsborough College
    CUNY Fatherhood Academy information. Workshops about parenting, personal development, employment, economic stability, education & college enrollment.
  20. Community Healthcare Network’s Teens P.A.C.T
    Peer Leader Position Applications, Teen Health Awareness & Reproductive Health Services, Free condoms.
  21. Computer Resource Centers (CRC) – Parks and Recreation
    The Department of Parks & Recreation’s Computer Resource Centers offer free city-wide digital media education program for teens with both year-round programming and intensive summer programs. Teens receive training & access to resources allowing them to produce their own projects using video, audio, graphic design, photography, and game design technology.

  24. Exalt Youth
    Exalt offers youth, ages 15-19, who’ve been involved in the criminal justice system opportunities for success & development through a three phase program involving training, paid internships & career prep.
  25. Exploring Program
    Career-focused, after-school program for students ages 14-20. Exploring NY partners with a diverse group of NYC-based businesses, nonprofits & law enforcement agencies & teaches community engagement, professional development, and resume-building.

  27. Flatbush YMCA
    The YMCA of Greater New York is a community service organization promoting positive values,  through programs that build mind, body and spirit, with a focus on youth.

  29. Girl Scouts of Greater New York

    Paid Youth Internship Program for Youth ages 16-24 years old who are out of school/out of work.  Opportunities are available throughout the 5 boroughs and in various sectors, including IT, healthcare, Security, Maintenance, Social Assistance.
  31. Groundswell Murals
    The Summer Leadership Institute offers paid summer jobs for youth interested in researching, designing and painting a large-scale mural with a social justice theme.
  32. Habitat for Humanity NYC
    Office internships & a variety of volunteer opportunities available.
  33. HEAT Program (Health & Education Alternatives for Teens)
    Offering information on volunteer opportunities & youth events, along with teen health information including HIV/AIDS Prevention & Safe Sexual Health resources.
  34. Housing Works
    Information about housing options for homeless youth, Primary Care Services information, dental services, mental health services referral information, drug treatment program information and STD/STI screening referrals.
  35. HRA Office of Child Support Enforcement
    NYC’s Human Resources Administration provides family-centered resources and services to enhance the quality of life of all New Yorkers.
  36. Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy
    Programs for students, ages 8-19, teaching personal, professional & academic skill development, grounded in ancient and contemporary African traditions.
  37. Iris House
    Iris House offers Safer Sex education, kits and condoms, along with youth services and community service opportunities.
  38. Italian American Civil Rights League (IACRL)
    IACRL opportunities include a Summer Youth Employment Program (Earn up to $1440 in 14 weeks); Free Employment Training; Free Customer Service Certification for 17-21 year olds; Work Readiness Programs; Pre-Worksite Internship Prep; Supportive Services Referrals.
  39. Just As I Am (JAIA)
    JAIA’s Youth Council offers empowering self development workshops and events, leadership training and community service opportunities.
  40. Kings Theatre
    Career training opportunities, entertainment & community events.
  41. Legal Outreach, Inc.                     
    Offering legal and educational programs to facilitate the pursuit of higher education.  The Law and Justice Institute (LJI) is a five-week program for rising ninth graders that seeks to inspire students to strive for academic excellence and to pursue careers in the law.
  42. Luna Park
    Luna Park, an amusement park in the heart of Coney Island, has many fun summer job opportunities for teens available at the largest theme Park in NYC.
  43. Madison Square Boys & Girls Club
    Offering afterschool programming for youth ages 6-18yrs old. For only $5, each member receives homework help, tutoring, creative arts such as dance, drama, fashion and fine arts, in addition to a robust sports and fitness program, music studio and character and leadership programs. Boys & Girls club is a safe place for children to learn, grown and have fun.
  44. Medgar Evers College Now Program
    Dual enrollment and college-readiness programs for NYC 11th and 12th grader students.
  45. National Youth Organization of Pakistan & the Alliance for Pakistan and Urdu Studies at NYU
    Offering a youth internship program, skills training programs & a language program.
  46. NEW (Nontraditional Employment for Women)
    A free seven-to-nine week training program for women interested in blue collar careers. Upon graduation women are placed in union construction apprenticeships, facilities maintenance jobs, positions with public utilities and transportation careers.
  47. New York Aquarium – WCS
    For teens interested in wildlife conservation, science, education, and public speaking, the NY Aquarium is seeking teen volunteers (aged 15-19 yrs. old) to be discovery guides.  Discovery Guides help staff exhibits, teach visitors about marine conservation, and assist at events and education programs. As a docent or discovery guide, teens have the opportunity to meet individuals from around the world and join a family of fellow volunteers, staff, and wildlife experts who share a passion for our natural world.
  48. New York Historical Society
    Summer programs include the Student Historian Internship program (for rising 10-12 graders as well as matriculating college freshman), the Scholar Program (rising 9-12 graders) and the  fall Saturday Academy which provides free SAT prep to all students.
  49. New York On Tech
    Career development, mentoring and support for students interested in the field of technology.
  50. No Kidding (HRA/OCSE Program)
    Job opportunities & free workshops for other youth organizations, plus teen pregnancy prevention information & resources.
  51. NYC Bar Association’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion
    The Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program is an intensive program providing summer internships & legal career training.
  52. NYC College of Technology
