Free Tax Preparation Assistance

The filing deadline to submit 2018 income tax forms is Monday, April 15th, 2019. Local resources are available to help you prepare and submit taxes for free. Click here for a list of free tax preparation services in Brooklyn. Citywide free tax preparation services are available at www1.nyc.gov/site/dca/consumers/file-your-taxes or by calling 311.

LAS Flatbush – Free Tax Assistance Program (VITA) – Lander College of Arts & Sciences at Touro College (1602 Avenue J, Brooklyn, NY 11230) is offering free Federal and NY State tax preparation for families that earn up to $58,000 on Sundays from 10 AM – 1 PM. The services are available February 17th – April 7th, 2019. Tax preparation is provided by IRS-Certified Touro Accounting Students. Please make sure to bring your Photo ID, Social Security cards for self, spouse and all dependents, All tax forms (W-2, 1099, 1098, etc.), 2017 income tax return (prior year’s return), Form 1095-A for those insured through the Marketplace, Bank account information (voided check), All receipts for tax-deductible personal expenses and Day care information. To file a joint tax return, both spouses must be present. English, Yiddish and Hebrew speaking tax preparers available. Certain form limitations apply. Questions? Call: 718.252.7800 ext. 59286

VITA Tax Preparation Services – If you earned $54,000 or less in 2018, you may qualify for free VITA/TCE tax preparation services. The NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs (DCA) has partnered with over 200 VITA sites citywide to offer knowledgeable IRS certified volunteer preparers who will help you complete an accurate tax return. Some sites let you drop off your tax documents and pick up the completed return later. Some sites also offer free services for those who are self-employed; need to apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN); or have to file a return for a previous tax year. A map to search for your local NYC Free Tax Prep site will be available at this link in mid-January 2019

Grow Brooklyn is offering free tax prep at Brooklyn Borough Hall beginning January 22nd – April 15th, 2019 for those who made under $33,000 in 2018. Tax preparation assistance will be offered at Borough Hall on Mondays from 12-7 PM, and Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 10 AM – 2 PM through April 15th. Community Tax Aid, Inc (CTA) is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization which has been preparing tax returns FREE for low-income taxpayers since 1969. CTA is dedicated to providing all services (federal, state, and city personal income tax forms) with the special needs of and benefits for low income taxpayers in mind. Tax Preparation Assistance at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation – Did you know a major untapped source of cash for low income families is the Earned Income Tax Credit? Some 35,000 individuals in Bedford Stuyvesant are eligible for EITC while only roughly 25% actually claimed these returns. Restoration is committed to increasing access to this major resource and partners to provide free tax preparation assistance at Restoration Plaza for income eligible individuals. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is operating a free Taxpayer Assistance Center at their Brooklyn offices (2 Metro Tech, 1st floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201.) Services are provided Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM. Assistance is available in over 150 languages. Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation has partnered with leaders in the financial sector to present the Wealth Building Tuesday’s series, equipping individuals with information necessary to make sound decisions about their financial future.
